Chapter Eight
âThe repairs on the bridge were completed just this morning, Mr. Schofield,â Teri said brightly. âSo now the approach to Oak Meadows is as good as new. Isnât the view lovely from here?â
Mr. Schofield grunted. Grunting had so far been the extent of his comments during their trip from the airport.
As heâd stashed Schofieldâs luggage in the trunk, Ken Jacobs had told Teri in a harried whisper that his client was a little out of sorts because of a last-minute flight schedule change. Apparently, heâd ended up on a plane with a flight number that included the double use of a certain digitâto remain nameless, Ken added judiciouslyâwhich he considered very unlucky. It was just the sort of situation he always took great pains to avoid, but since he was eager to close the deal on Oak Meadows, Schofield braved getting on the plane and probably worried about crashing the whole time.
Although she felt rather guilty about rejoicing in another personâs temporary misery, Teri couldnât have been happier. The edgier Schofield was, the better. Snatching a glance at his luggage ticket, she noted that heâd arrived on flight 1544, so that meant âfourâ was Mr. Schofieldâs unlucky number. She stored away that information to be used later.
On her way to the airport, Teri had stopped at her New Orleans apartment and changed into a gray tailored suit and black pumps. She would much rather be in her casual clothes, but she needed to look professional for the one day of her vacation she intended to work.
But it wasnât really work, Teri reasoned. Getting back in the real-estate saddle to keep a buyer from buying was definitely not what she routinely did for a living. If it were, sheâd be broke.
Jack had only grudgingly approved of Teriâs participation in âthe plan.â Last night, sheâd slept in the room next to his, and although heâd been very standoffish, heâd taken her pulse before retiring. Then heâd taken it again three times that morning before allowing her to get in the car without him, and had made her promise to check in with him by cellular phone on a regular basis. Despite their almost-amorous encounter last night and the resulting awkwardness afterward, Jack had continued to fuss and watch over Teri as if she were a chick and he were the mother hen.
But Teri had never felt better. And now that sheâd met Schofield in person, she was more firmly resolved than ever to make sure the sale of the Tremain estate did not go through. She realized that Schofield didnât appreciate Oak Meadows any more than heâd appreciate any other piece of profitable real estate. It was just a means to an end for himâ¦just as it had been for Teri before sheâd floated down a cool, dark tunnel toward the light.
But as much as she disliked Schofield, Teri was determined to play to perfection the part of an eager, obsequious salesperson. In order for things to work out the way
